There’s something so comforting about a warm, homemade breakfast. Biscuits smothered in a simple, yet savory, sausage gravy checks that box. I’ve made this too many times to count and it always goes over so well. With only a few ingredients you can throw it together in a pinch.
It is a staple for us on Christmas morning. I double the recipe to make sure there’s enough to go around and freeze any left overs. Yes! it freezes great.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb bulk breakfast pork sausage (make sure to get the breakfast seasoned sausage – this will give your gravy flavor).
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
- 4 cups milk
Instructions:
- Cooking the Sausage: Begin by crumbing the pork sausage into a large skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until the sausage is browned and no longer pink, stirring frequently to ensure even cooking.
- Adding the Flour and Seasoning: With the sausage browned, it’s time to season and thicken. Using a wire whisk, stir in the all-purpose flour, salt, and coarse ground black pepper.
- Gradually Incorporating Milk: Gradually pour in the milk, one half cup at a time. Keep the heat at a medium-low level and allow the mixture to simmer until it thickens to perfection. This step requires patience, but the result is worth it.
- Perfecting the Consistency: Continue stirring until the sausage gravy reaches the desired consistency. I prefer mine thicker but you might like it loose and will need to cook for less time.
- Serving with Warm Biscuits: While the sausage gravy is simmering, prepare warm biscuits. Split them and place them on serving plates.
- Presentation: Ladle the sausage gravy generously over the warm split biscuits.
Enjoy the warm comfort of this classic breakfast!
